Home Sweet Home

After Grandpa died,
Mom told us he was back home
-thanksgiving dinner

In steerage for weeks,
They came on deck to see home
-lady liberty.

Summer camp over,
There was a long bus ride back
-home seemed to be new.

At meeting Boss says:
"I'm giving myself a raise!
-you can all go home."

Coming home again,
I felt like a stranger there
-after the war, distance.

I walked through the ward,
knowing this was home to them
-children's hospital.

When young, home was huge!
I went away to college
-then I found it small.

Victory touchdown!
After losing all season
-happy homecoming.

  2. Thanks for these, Edward. I enjoyed the various perspectives on home--looking close, looking away and coming back. All so good!

  3. Lovely Edward! They all appeal to the emotions. We all recognize them.

Let's hope we'll all come home when Obama wins. :)

  5. You reminded me of going back to my old childhood home, and also the halls of my grade school - everything was so tiny! Enjoyed your post!

  7. Thank you Edward, these are all soooo great! The verse telling of the children's ward being home touched me the most. Mrs. Jim has worked professionally as a social worker in the children's ward of M.D.Anderson Cancer Center here.
I take you are not a Red Socks fan or they may have been mentioned, when I lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, Fenway Park was 'homecoming' of sorts to me.
Thank you for your nice comment, our Adi is a very loving dog.

  9. Home represents so many things to so many people; all your examples reflect wonderfully their place of belonging or being.

  11. nice takes on home, the one about being a stranger stands out to me, perhaps homes will always be the same but you can change somehow

  12. They're all nice but I particlly like and can relate to the one about coming home and it seeming small now.

  13. What a great range you have covered. They are all good. My favorites, I think, were the third, fifth and sixth.

  14. Your second poem hit me hard. My dad told me once of returning from WW2 on the Queen Elizabeth after being wounded in Holland. The patients were brought up on deck to see the Statue of Liberty, as they came into harbor. How could of I forgotten a homecoming story like that?

  15. What wonderful poems about home. I particularly enjoyed the immigrant poem. My grandmother came here through Ellis Island when she was a teenager. I have often pictured what it must have been like for her.
