Carol and the Baby
By Edward S. Gault
The clerk was having this
Wonderful chat with the woman
Directly in front of me
With the frock coat.
They must have been good friends
For they talked on and on
About Carol and the baby.
And the manager
Was in the doorway
Of his office
With his back
To the front of the store
Talking about the setbacks
(the many setbacks)
He had in sales.
I went down the street
To the other store
And as I walked in
The clerk’s phone rang-
And they talked and talked,
About Carol and the baby.

Ooooh, that feels familiar! It seems like a nightmare yet it happens often in real life.
ReplyDeleteinteresting bit of writing, wonder if that's how rumor's get spread
ReplyDeleteThis gave me a real chuckle! Great response to this prompt!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Sounds like something that might happen in a small town.
ReplyDeleteDear Edward--
ReplyDeleteThis one made me smile--big smiles!
I've lived in small towns most of my life, and have been alernately charmed and p.o'd at this type of interchange....but ultimately they are why we live in such small communities, yes?
I loved the never-ending tone of this...you can't escape, even if you wanted to, about Carol and the baby!
Gossip, once set in motion, continues to ebb and flow!
ReplyDeletePerfect never-ending plight. I felt just like that at a coffee shop this morning.
ReplyDeleteThis is just great! I wish I knew Carol and baby :)
ReplyDeletei am thinking along with lissa, how one talk jump to another then to another with soeminserted versions
ReplyDeleteBeen there, done that. What ever happened to REALLY GOOD customer service? It's so rare to find these days. Shouldn't be the exception. Well done Edward!

Hahahaha. For me, it was the Post Office worker bringing his baby first to the bank and then to the drug store. I wonder if he was carrying Carol's baby?
ReplyDeleteYour poem made me chuckle! Life in a small town! Carol and the baby must have been the newest celebs!
