Little Hobo
by Edward S. Gault
My mother pointed out to me
As she helped me put on
The various parts of my hobo costume,
That winning contests was not easy.
Other kids may have worked harder,
I should not get my hopes up or
My expectations too high.
She did not want me to
To suffer the blow when I didn’t win.
Still, I carried home a blue ribbon that day
